A Complete, Ongoing Step-by-Step Watercolor Painting Course with Phyllis Gubins
This weekly series is an introduction to all of the basics for the serious beginner and a wonderful refresher course for the experienced watercolorist with each session covering a new element of this exciting and unpredictable medium.
The series will be a total of 8 2-hour Tuesday evening classes from 5:30PM to 7:30PM.
The first 4 classes will be Jan 24th, Jan 31st, Feb7th & Feb 28th.
The 2nd set will be March 7th, March 14th, March 28th and April 4th
No supplies are necessary the first 2 weeks. After that either bring your own or rent from us for $10/week.
Series discount for all 8 classes is $200. If purchased separately they are $39/class.
Week #1: Watercolor Supplies, our Tools of the Trade
Tuesday, January 24th 5:30-7:30pm $39 each supplies included
Our introductory class will give you an in-depth understanding of all the various watercolor supplies. You’ll become familiar with all the different types of paints, papers, brushes, palettes, sponges, masks, additives and all of the other tools and materials watercolorists get to play with. Lots of supplies will be available for hands-on exploration. After this session you will have a full understanding of all the supplies you need (and those you really don’t need), what to do with them and how to set up your perfect palette for optimum painting results. Class printouts will include helpful suggested supply lists and hot tips on how to get everything at the best prices.
Week# 2: Paints, A Rainbow of Magical Colors
Tuesday, January 31st 5:30-7:30pm $39 each supplies included
Learn all about paints and how to select paint colors for your perfect personal artist palette. You will understand the reason to choose warm and cool of each primary, how to choose colors for your painting that will look wonderful together, how to mix colors and the best brands to choose and why. We will begin by creating your own personalized color wheel that will be an invaluable tool you will use over and over for years to come. As you become acquainted with your beautiful paints you will learn their hues, values, temperature and intensity as we cover the How’s and Why’s of color combinations that make successful paintings. Master this class and you have 60% of watercolor painting down.
Week#3: The Characteristics of your Paints

Now we go into detail about the magical properties of the paint in your palette and practice color mixing using transparent, semi-transparent, opaque, staining, non-staining, granulating and sedimentary paints. . As you learn the differences in all of these, you will paint numerous personalized reference charts that will very helpful for all future painting projects, as you learn how each color interacts and relates to the others in your palette. We’ll study the major manufacturer’s color charts to learn more about each color and you will learn how to mix beautiful colors that you will love.
Week #4: Go Wild with Brushes
Tuesday, February 28th 5:30-7:30pm $39 each (bring your supplies or rent from us for $10)
Now we are ready to paint away and play with so many different types of brushes. We will use rounds, flats, fans, filberts, mops, daggers, liners and lots of other specialized brushes. You’ll learn the proper wrist and hand techniques to get the desired and proper brush stokes for many different styles of paintings. Each brush has it’s own personality and you will learn how to become friends with each one as you experiment with them and you will also create reference charts for future reminders of all the techniques.
Week #5: Mastering Water to Paint Ratios
Tuesday, March 7th 5:30-7:30pm $39 each (bring your supplies or rent from us for $10)
The big question of water will be covered, including how to paint wet-in wet. Learn how to know if you are using enough or too much water? What you see is not always what you get, especially in watercolor painting. Learn how to predict the final outcome. This is the fundamental lesson in why we love watercolors. You will discover how the watercolor that we love truly is magical but it is also controllable, if you just think it all through.
Week #6: How to make Beautiful Paintings Even If you Can’t Draw
Tuesday, March 14th 5:30-7:30pm $39 each (bring your supplies or rent from us for $10)
Contrary to general knowledge, it is not necessary to know how to draw to be a great artist. Many well know artists use photo references and various tools to create their works. Learn to use a projector, Lucida drawing tool, light box, graph paper, tracing paper and photo transfer techniques as the first step to make great art of your own. Bring a variety of your own watercolor surfaces that you will be transferring your designs to, everything else will be provided in class. We will not paint, but we will prepare numerous surfaces with images for you to complete at home.
Week # 7 Painting Techniques
Tuesday, March 28th 5:30-7:30pm $39 each (bring your supplies or rent from us for $10)
We will explore an amazing variety of techniques including more in-depth wet-on-wet methods, wet on dry, dry brush, lifting out, scratching in, softening edges, glazing, back-runs, blossoms, blending, color washes, negative painting, spattering, sponge painting, scraping back with credit cards, palette knives, brush ends, an exacto knife, sandpapers, and using a variety of unexpected items such as Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, rice, salt, masking tape, masking fluid, wax-paper, saran wrap & candles as resists and an atomizer..
Week # 8: Alternative Paint Processes
Tuesday, April 4th 5:30-7:30pm $39 each (bring your supplies or rent from us for $10)
Using Watercolor Sticks, Watercolor Markers, Watercolor Pencils, Watercolor Inks, Liquid Watercolors, Brusho Watercolor powders and Watercolor Filled Spray Bottles. Using these Alternative Paint processes are truly a fun and very creative way to make unique and exciting paintings. We will experiment hands-on with all of these products and you can decide which ones you wish to continue using before you make the investment.
